Here at Barguse Riding Centre, we not only provide informative riding lessons on our school horses but also cater for the private horse owner who wishes to develop their skills further.
We are proud to be able to offer access to some of the top trainers in both dressage and jumping. Barguse is unique in being able to provide training for all levels of rider from complete beginner to the most experienced horse owner.
Please check out our various trainers.
Lisa first began her riding career concentrating on BSJA jumping and BE eventing. However, her passion for dressage was triggered after she was fortunate to take some lessons with the late Franz Rochowansky (former Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School) as a teenager. Thus, began a long and at times painful journey discovering the intricacies of dressage and the various training techniques. Some more successful than others!!
Lisa has been fortunate to have had training with some of the UK's top trainers. However, it was through purchasing a Woodlander horse that she was introduced to Michael when Lynne Crowden of Woodlander Stud donated some lessons. It was an extreme turning point in her riding and training career. She credits German dressage trainer, Michael Beining with finally teaching her the correct use of the seat and fully understanding the German Scales of Training.
Despite having trained and competed from novice to advanced with some success, she suddenly noticed that her horses were going in a completely different way despite not always being mentally or physically designed to do the job and the results were beginning to get noticed! Having had a few years sabbatical out of the competition arena whilst moving home, business and having a baby, Lisa is now looking forward to getting back on the competition circuit with her horses! She presently owns a Dimaggio mare working at Advanced Medium level and a 4 year old gelding by Riverside as well as numerous riding school ponies!
Lisa teaches all levels of rider including para and has a particular interest in teaching junior riders, many, of whom are now doing really well in dressage competitions and are interestingly always complimented on how well they sit in the saddle and use their seat!!
Lisa has been taught by Michael for several years and finds that although demanding in wanting it done correctly, he is approachable and extremely patient. Lisa particularly enjoys teaching the dressage academy.
It is vital that riders understand that the basic training foundations must be in place before attempting more advanced movements.
If you cannot canter your horse in a balanced manner then you're going to struggle to do flying changes!
Dressage is a fantastic sport and if you think you'd like to give it a go, please give us a call.

Michael Beining
Barguse is fortunate to host regular clinics with international German trainer, Michael Beining. His training credentials are impressive (see the following page) However, Michael will happily train riders from beginner to advanced level whether you are in to pure dressage, eventing or showjumping. As long as you are keen to learn then he is happy to teach you!
He has an excellent command of English, enjoys teaching both junior and senior riders on various types of horses (so don't worry if you do not own a huge moving warmblood! ) and is approachable and patient!! This is an established and regular clinic and runs over several days to allow riders the opportunity to have either one lesson or an intensive course depending on your time and finances!! During each clinic, we host a video/social evening and encourage you to come along and join in the lively debates and discussions!
We have a purpose built viewing area with refreshment facilities for you to enjoy if you choose to stay and watch some lessons.
Sessions cost £60 and last between 50 – 60 minutes. (Riding club members may try one lesson at a discounted price of £50) Whether you choose to take one lesson or have an intensive course, then we can accommodate you.
(For riders who wish to take more than one lesson, we offer a payment plan to help you spread the cost) Stabling can also be provided. We accept cash, cheque or any major credit or debit cards. Please see FAQ’s regarding any of the above.
Barguse has the added benefit of both extensive, hardstanding parking and is also situated in the middle of Cornwall making both coasts very accessible.
Close to the major sightseeing attractions (the Eden Project is just 5 minutes away) it gives riders the possibility to combine a dressage clinic with a short or long break if they choose. Surrounded by numerous B&B’s, caravan parks or self- catering accommodation, there are plenty of places to stay or alternatively, you can hook up your lorry and stay at Barguse.
